Ground Balls in Lacrosse - Instructions, Videos, etc.

You often hear that ground balls win lacrosse games. Why? Because if you can win the battle for ground balls, your team will control the ball longer and thus will have more potential chances to score.

Ground ball drills are an essential part of lacrosse training. At a minimum, coaches should conduct one-on-one and two-on-one ground ball drills where players compete for ground balls. For additional ground ball drills, please visit the main Lacrosse Drills section.

Ground Ball Tips

  • Box out your opponent. Use your body to shield the ball from your opponent.
  • Have two hands on the stick when scooping up a ground ball (versus trying to scoop the ball with one hand). This lessens the chance that the opponent or a lump in the field will knock the stick out of your hands.
  • Don't stop and rake. This allows the opposing team to catch up to you and fight for the ball.
  • Get the butt end of your stick down low and run "through" the ball.
